Our little black kitten, Java Bean, noticed the toy mouse for the first time.

He pawed at it, first with one foot, then the other. It moved - he jumped backwards. He bravely approached the toy again and batted it some more - it rolled and bounced! He jumped sideways! I could see his feline instinct kicking in as he pounced on it, rolling over, and juggling the toy from paw to paw. It got away from him! Java chased the toy and captured it! Then he began flipping the toy in the air with the ecstatic frenzy that only a cat can know! He jumped for it, catching the toy mouse in his mouth before coming back to earth! Java looked at me in amazement - his eyes as big as saucers, his fur totally bushed out. His surprised expression revealed a sudden - and unexpected knowledge - of what it was to be a cat!
